"It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart, and head."Henri Cartier-Bresson

A great photograph isn't defined by the camera that captured it—it's defined by how the photographer sees the world.

This class is designed for photographers who want to create stronger, more compelling images by mastering the art of composition. Rather than focusing on camera settings, menus, or technical specifications, we'll explore the creative decisions that transform an ordinary scene into an extraordinary photograph.

You'll learn how to recognize strong visual elements, simplify complex scenes, use light and perspective effectively, and guide the viewer's eye through an image. We'll cover concepts such as balance, framing, leading lines, negative space, layering, patterns, color, and visual storytelling, all through practical exercises and real-world examples.

Whether you shoot with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or smartphone, the principles of composition remain the same. This class is about developing your eye—learning to see photographs before you press the shutter.

Perfect for photographers of all experience levels, this class will help you move beyond simply taking pictures and begin creating images with purpose, impact, and emotion.

Classes will take place at a private residence in The Woodlands. The exact address will be sent a few days before the class.

If you have an interest in learning more about photography, this introductory photography class will teach you how to get off of the "auto" mode and learn to shoot in "manual” with your DSLR or Mirrorless camera.

Why shoot in manual? Your camera does not know if you want a blurred or focused background.  Nor does it know if you want a photograph to be brighter or darker.  It doesn't know a lot of things!  By learning to shoot in "manual" mode, you will learn to have complete control of your camera settings to achieve the look(s) you want for your images!

What makes this class different from other photography classes is it uses hands-on exercises and excursions and optional weekly assignments to reinforce learning. It is NOT is a lecture style, boring class.I teach one topic at a time so no one leaves overwhelmed, and everyone has plenty of time to practice new skills in between classes. My promise to you is that you WILL leave each class inspired and excited to practice!

This class will take place over three 2.5 hour sessions and will highlight the following topics:

  • Lenses and their function

  • Basic Lighting

  • The Exposure Triangle- Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO

  • Maximizing your camera's potential
